Biomass Bad, Biomess Even Worse
The idea that burning biomass is green and clean is a myth. Although biomass is supposed to be renewable, natural vegetation such as trees and plants, it produces as many hazardous chemicals as cigarettes, millions of tiny particles and more greenhouse gas than coal.
If this isn’t bad enough, the Barton Renewable Energy Plant aims to take it one step further by burning BIOMESS, which is waste wood, waste plastics from the Trafford Centre and other waste as it becomes available. Waste wood from construction and demolition sites will contain lead paint and preservatives such as arsenic, copper and chromium heavy metals. Plastics like pvc, when burnt at the relatively low temperature of 850 degrees C will produce dioxins, a known cancer-forming chemical.
“We can’t allow this to happen in Davyhulme†said Pete Kilvert. Chairman of the Breathe Clean Air Group. “This incinerator is not going to use Best Available Technology, its out-dated, bag filtration system will not be able to filter out all these chemicals; its short chimney stack will not be able to disperse its emissions adequately; and Greater Manchester will be stuck with this dirty plant for 25 years or more†he added.
The promoter, Peel Energy has applied to the Environment Agency for an environmental Permit. The EA is asking people who will be affected by the incinerator’s emissions to let them know about their local area, school, playground, etc. See https://www.bcag.co.uk/submit-your-objections-to-the-environment-agency/ for more details.
