Runcorn Incinerator to Increase Waste Throughput
Trafford’s Breathe Clean Air Group is saddened and concerned to hear that more air pollution is destined to fall in Greater Manchester.
The Ineos Waste Incinerator at Runcon has just gained approval to increase the amount of waste it can incinerate, from 80,000 tones, which the Labour Secretary of State had said would protect the environment and public, to 340,000 tonnes per year. The waste will not just be supplied from the county of Cheshire, but will come from further affield including overseas waste.
BCAG Chairman, Pete Kilvert said, “I feel sorry for the people of Runcorn who will suffer from air pollution and the constant fumes from HGV thundering through their town to feed this monster. Also the people of Trafford, Salford and Manchester will be in the fall-out zone as emissions from this huge plant will be carried by the prevailing wind along the Mersey and Ship Canal Corridor. It is scandalous that the Government allows these plants to pollute the air we breathe, at a time when the European Commission is prosecuting the UK for breaches of Safety regulations concerning air pollution.”
The Breathe Clean Air Group paid tribute to the Halton Action Group Against The Incinerator for opposing this scheme. BCAG has been campaigning against the Davyhulme Incinerator for over three years, which has just been given the go-ahead to pollute the residents of Trafford, Salford and Manchester.
I recently stood as a Green Party nominee for Halton Council. Many people in Runcorn are concerned by the environmental and health dangers that may be associated with the Mersey Gateway project, and the new incinerator. I was not elected, but I still intend to investigate further, particularly in regard to appropriate air pollution monitoring, legal requirements, and how to effectively hold these developments to account . I would appreciate any advice or help that you may be able to offer. Perhaps I could attend one of your meetings, or have a chat with one of you? I am willing to become involved with your own planned actions if that was something that would help at all.
Yours truly, Dave Heath
To whom it may concern,
My grandson lives mere meters from the incinerator in Runcorn (Weston Point) and was recently diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in June 2015. Additionally, his mother is now tested positive for abnormal cells and we are acutely aware of the dangers of that incinerator. We are in the process of moving her family away from the area but would like any assistance on the matter if possible. To whom must we contact regarding our concerns?
Sincerely,
Jason Evans
