New Fears about Davyhulme Incinerator

The Peel Group’s announcement that they will be investing £50 billion into the northwest economy has been welcomed by many. Large developments along the Manchester Ship Canal corridor will be part of an ever-expanding commercial and industrial enterprise.

“But has anyone stopped to think how much waste will be generated by these new businesses and where it is all going to be disposed of, if there is an incinerator at Davyhulme” said Peter Kilvert, Chairman of the Breathe Clean Air Group. “The Canal could well become a conveyor belt, bringing waste to the Barton Renewable Energy Plant. A lot of this waste material would have originated in China and East Asia, bringing alien bugs and bacteria to Greater Manchester” he added.

“Burning biomass is bad enough, with its emissions of fine particulates, heavy metals including arsenic and other organic nasties such as dioxin”, added Mr Kilvert” but now we run the risk of unknown waste products from the burning of commercial and industrial waste.”

The emissions from biomass burning incinerators have been linked with respiratory diseases like asthma and COPD, heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and premature death. Currently, the Health Protection Agency is assessing the health implications of living near to Municipal Waste Incinerators and in particular looking at infant deaths, still births and congenital abnormalities such as cleft palate and spina bifida.
